Establishing and implementing national cradle-to-grave control of radioactive sources is an important task in ensuring the comprehensive management of radioactive sources in a country.  Thirty-five representatives from waste management operators and regulatory bodies from 16 Member States in the Asia and the Pacific region[1] have attended a regional training course on this topic in Tehran from 7 to 11 October 2017. Participants received an overview of options for the safe management of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) during the course, which was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency in cooperation with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran through the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) and the Iran Nuclear Waste Management Company.

The main aim of the course was to provide guidance on the management of DSRS, as well as practical demonstrations and hands-on training in dismantling devices, removing sources, and conditioning DSRS of category 3-5.

Course topics included the life cycle of sources, categorization, and technical procedures for conditioning. The participants, all of whom are involved in national radioactive waste management programmes, were able to observe a real-life conditioning operation at the Iran Nuclear Waste Management Company where local experts demonstrated the conditioning process.

Together with local and IAEA experts, the course participants reviewed and discussed different options for the management of category 3-5 DSRS, and the requirements needed to implement such practices. The participants discussed national experiences and their inventories of radioactive devices, as well as the way to manage these devices safely once they are declared as disused. The removal of sources from devices and proper conditioning operations, as well as storage and disposal, formed the focus of the debates. Plenary discussions were followed by working groups, where the participants carried out real source conditioning operations.

The IAEA regularly organizes training courses of this kind in its Member States through its technical cooperation programme. This training took place within the framework of the IAEA TC project RAS9085, ‘Enhancing the Radioactive Waste Management Infrastructure in the Asia - Pacific Region’.
