With over 1.3 million items in its collection and having received more than 13,000 visitors in 2016, the IAEA Lise Meitner Library specializes in information resources related to nuclear energy and nuclear applications. It supports researchers from nuclear research institutes, governmental organizations and laboratories of IAEA Member States through its print and online resources, and by providing reference services and research support.
Two researchers who have recently benefitted from the services of the IAEA Lise Meitner Library told us of their experiences.
Dr Shakira Bedoya, from Peru, holds an international law degree and is currently undertaking a second specialization, a Master of Science in Disaster Management, at the University of Vienna. She said the library provided access to resources that were not easily found in public and university libraries.
“My research focuses on the effects of nuclear reliability calculations and its role within techno-scientific systemic expertise for the construction of risk assessments,” Dr Bedoya said. “It was important to take the time to search for the necessary sources and I found the IAEA Lise Meitner Library to be user-friendly and well-equipped.”
A social scientist by training and with a professional background in nuclear non-proliferation and safeguards, Greg Dupuy, from the United States currently works as an independent consultant developing concepts and approaches for safeguards and open source analysis methodologies. He is also pursuing a part-time postgraduate degree in Nuclear Technology Management at the University of Manchester.
“I sought resources at the IAEA Lise Meitner Library for a research assignment in a graduate course on nuclear decommissioning,” he explained. “I was looking for specific publications and recent information on new decommissioning technologies, and information on how Member States were thinking of using them. I appreciated the textbooks, trade and conference publications that were available on-site, which were not available to me online and were too expensive for me to order independently. The IAEA Lise Meitner Library had more than enough information for my needs.”
It was important to take the time to search for the necessary sources and I found the IAEA Lise Meitner Library to be user-friendly and well-equipped.
