Duration: 1.5 hour

Today more than 400 nuclear power reactors supply over 10% of the world’s total electricity and a quarter of all low-carbon power playing a key role in the world’s low-carbon energy mix.Approximately 10 000 tonnes of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) are discharged annually with new forms of spent fuel set to arise, as innovative reactors such as Small Modular and Advanced Reactors (SMR-AMR) come online).Since 1987, the IAEA gathers the community of operators, researchers, regulators, decision makers and other experts focused on this relevant undertaking providing a forum for the exchange of information on national SNF management strategies and on how the management of spent fuel will support the role that nuclear energy could play in a changing energy mix.The last edition of the IAEA International Conference on the Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors, with the theme “Meeting the Moment”, held in June 2024, was attended by around 300 participants from 58 Member States and 6 International Organizations. It was organized in-cooperation with the OECD/NEA, the WNA, the EC and the WNTI.This Webinar aims at providing an overview of the main discussions and topics addressed as well as the main takeaways and conclusions from the IAEA International Conference on the Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors: Meeting the Moment.
