Saint-Paul-Lez-Durance, France
Event code: EVT2103800

The International Atomic Energy Agency is organizing a Technical Meeting on Decommissioning Considerations for Fusion Facilities at Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, France, from 6 to 10 February 2023. The meeting will be hosted jointly by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission and the ITER Organization. An option for virtual participation, via Microsoft Teams, will be provided.

The purpose of this event is to support Member States planning to launch demonstration fusion power plant facilities in the early consideration of decommissioning and related waste management issues, taking into account experience gained at the Joint European Torus and ITER facilities.

Discussions and exchanges are expected to focus on experience gained and current good practice concerned with planning and implementation of decommissioning of toroidal magnetic fusion facilities, including on aspects relevant to management of the resulting materials and waste. Specific topics to be covered include:

  • Key considerations for decommissioning of magnetic fusion devices
  • Regulatory framework for decommissioning of fusion facilities
  • General decommissioning considerations at the facility design stage
  • Developing a decommissioning strategy and plan
  • Implementation of decommissioning activities
  • Management of fusion specific radioactive waste and toxic materials

The materials presented and discussed at this meeting will form the basis for a technical report to be prepared following the meeting.

The deadline for submission of nominations for this event, via the competent national authorities, is 21 December 2022.
