IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi highlighted Spain’s support to the IAEA’s mandate and work, at a meeting this week with Fernando Valenzuela, Spain’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, on the occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) in Madrid.

Mr Grossi congratulated the Spanish government on the successful staging of the conference. “This shows Spain’s commitment to the global fight against climate change,” he said.

Mr Grossi underlined the various ways in which Spain has contributed to the IAEA, including by providing experts, hosting fellowship and scientific visits, providing extrabudgetary funding and supporting the Agency’s nuclear decommissioning and waste management activities.

Among the various activities carried out with Spain’s support, he highlighted that “in March, Spain’s Guardia Civil Training Centre was the first law enforcement organization to be designated an IAEA Collaborating Centre in Nuclear Security, in the area of response to nuclear security events.”

The focus of nuclear security is to prevent threats of nuclear terrorism and to respond to such acts, should they occur.

Mr Valenzuela echoed the important work of the IAEA, particularly in the areas of health, nuclear safety and security and monitoring and verification. He underlined Spain’s willingness to continue to increase its cooperation with the Agency.

Mr Grossi invited the Spanish government to participate at a high level in the IAEA International Conference on Nuclear Security, which will take place in Vienna from 10 to 14 February 2020.
