Using radiation for beneficial purposes requires appropriate protection of workers, patients, the public and the environment. The Division develops and helps implement safety standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste and transport.

    Regulatory Infrastructure and Transport Safety Section

    The Section leads the development of IAEA Safety Standards related to regulating the safety of radiation sources and the safe transport of radioactive material. It supports Member States in their application of these Standards and of the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources. Read more →

    Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section

    The Section’s primary role is to develop safety standards and guides to assist Member States in reaching the highest level of radiation safety, focusing on the use of ionizing radiation in energy production, medicine, industry and research.     Waste and Environmental Safety Section

    The Section develops the IAEA Safety Standards regarding radioactive waste management, decommissioning, remediation and environmental releases.  It also provides the Secretariat for the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management for establishing a global waste safety framework.
