From 16 to 20 September, the IAEA will hold the 63rd annual regular session of the General Conference at the Agency’s Vienna headquarters. In addition to exhibitions, meetings and signing ceremonies, the Department of Technical Cooperation (TC) will be hosting, or co-hosting in conjunction with other IAEA Departments, five side events during the week-long conference.
The first side event ‘IAEA Support to Environmental Remediation Projects’ will showcase successful environmental remediation initiatives supported by the IAEA and highlight partnership opportunities. The event will also provide the opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the IAEA Network on Environmental Management and Remediation (ENVIRONET) and to announce the first IAEA International Conference on the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in Industry. This side event will be held on Tuesday, 17 September 2019, from 11.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. in Conference Room C5, C building, seventh floor.
The second side event, scheduled to take place at 15.30 on 17 September in the conference room C5, has been organized to recognize the attainment of an important milestone by the Agency’s Post-graduate Education Courses (PGECs). ‘Celebrating the 100th Edition of the PGEC in Radiation Protection and the Safety of Radiation Sources—Vision for the Future’ will acknowledge the efforts channelled through 37 years’ worth of courses to build competence in radiation safety, while simultaneously establishing a vision for the future of such post-graduate courses.
On the third day of the General Conference, the Department of Technical Cooperation will hold a roundtable discussion focussing on the role of young professionals and students in raising public awareness about the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. ‘Youth in Nuclear: Engaging the Next Generation of Leaders’ will take place on 18 September at 09.00 in the conference room C4—located on the 7th floor of the C Building—and it will provide an opportunity for nuclear professionals, separated by generations, to close the experiential gap and exchange their perspectives.
The preservation of art and cultural heritage is a shared ambition of the IAEA and its Member States. On 19 September, beginning at 12.00 in M4 of the VIC’s M Building, the side event ‘Nuclear Techniques for Preserving Cultural Heritage’ will explore how nuclear technologies are leveraged through the technical cooperation programme to characterize and preserve artefacts of cultural importance.
InTouch+ is a powerful, interactive online platform used by the IAEA’s technical cooperation community to arrange and organize fellowships, scientific visits, training courses and more. The side event ‘New Edition of InTouch+’ will present the latest edition of the platform, which allows users to more easily create and edit profiles, apply to events and endorse candidates. Scheduled to take place on 19 September at 10.00 in M4, the event will be of particular interest to National Liaison Officers and project counterparts attending the General Conference.
