Nuclear Law Institute - Admission

2024 NLI Session

Every year, the IAEA organizes a two-week intensive training course on nuclear law. This event, known as the Nuclear Law Institute (NLI), is open to up to 60 participants, primarily lawyers, from IAEA Member States. The 2024 session will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 29 September to 11 October 2024.

For many years, the IAEA has assisted its Member States in developing their respective national laws for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation. In 2011, in response to the increasing demand from Member States for capacity-building in the area of nuclear law, including safety, security, safeguards and civil liability for nuclear damage, the IAEA established the NLI as a supplement to existing TC Programmes.

By the end of the training course, participants are expected to have acquired a solid understanding of all aspects of nuclear law and be able to draft, amend or review national nuclear legislation.

Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Requirements

Candidates wishing to apply for this event should follow the steps below.

Applications for financial support should be submitted online via  InTouch+ system. Offline nomination forms will not be considered. Applications should be linked to the relevant Technical Cooperation project INT0102 and event number EVT2400093. Access to the INTouch+ homepage is given through the candidate’s existing Nucleus username and password. If not yet registered,  the candidate must create a Nucleus account before proceeding with the event application process. The system is user-friendly and, once created, the profile is saved for all future events.

NOTE: Completed applications need to be approved by the relevant national authority, i.e. National Liaison Office through the system.

Applications should be received through the NLOs Offices no later than 9 May 2024. Please be advised that applications received after the stated deadline, or which have not been routed through the established official channels will not be considered. Nomination of female candidates is strongly encouraged.

Any issues or queries related to InTouch+ can be addressed to InTouch Contact Point.

In order to allow the broadest representation of IAEA Member States, and due to the limited number of places available, only one candidate per Member State will be considered.

Candidates should be legal experts or regulators employed in governments and relevant national agencies involved in the drafting of nuclear-related national legislation.

Candidates should have excellent knowledge of English, including, as far as possible, knowledge of legal terminology. Neither translation nor interpretation into any other language will be provided for the training session.

Candidates are required to attend the entire duration of the course.

Cost and Funding

Participation in the NLI is free of charge. The IAEA will cover expenses for travel and accommodation  as per IAEA rules and practices.
