The purpose of the conference was to discuss the present and future importance of the nuclear power option as a source for energy based on proven, accepted, economically competitive and environmentally benign technologies. The safe and reliable operation of existing nuclear power plants, the demonstration of convincing solutions to the storage and disposal of radioactive waste, a predictable licensing process and supportive government policies are essential prerequisites to achieving a wider public acceptance of nuclear power, which presently is the most important factor deciding its future application.
