Description

The seventh edition of the IAEA Yearbook concentrates on developments in nuclear science and technology. It provides a record of recent major events such as the Review and Extension Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which resulted in extension of the Treaty for an indefinite period and hence of the obligations of the IAEA in the sphere of safeguards - an area of activity which is covered in detail in Part E. Part A reports on the new concept of 'partnership in development' which was created to enhance the transfer of knowledge and expertise in the areas of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes. Other topics covered include the use of nuclear techniques for maintaining a cleaner environment, methods for improving animal production and the use of research reactors for the production of radioisotopes and for education and training purposes. The Yearbook further reports on the latest status and trends in nuclear power, the nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management. Part D, the Nuclear Safety Review, is issued this year in a new format concentrating on selected topics of special interest. It discusses the International Convention on Nuclear Safety, which was ratified in 1994, as well as the recent publication of the new International Basic Safety Standards for Protection Against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources. Parts C and D are also available separately.
