UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq. 29 December 2002

An UNMOVIC chemical team inspected the Chemical Engineering Design Centre in Baghdad. The Centre is part of the Sa'ad Company, which owns the Ibn Younis Centre, a mechanical design establishment, inspected yesterday. The Chemical Engineering Design Centre is involved in various projects for chemical and petrochemical production facilities. The team examined archives and current projects, and also looked into management and personnel.

An UNMOVIC multidisciplinary team inspected the General Commission of Customs in Baghdad. This Commission is the central customs authority in Iraq.

Today, we have received from the Iraqi National Monitoring Directorate a list of names of personnel associated with Iraq's chemical, biological, nuclear, and ballistic missile programmes. The list contains over 500 names in the chemical, biological, nuclear and missile areas. The Executive Chairman of UNMOVIC, Dr. Hans Blix, requested such a list in his letter of 12 December addressed to General Amir Al-Saadi, exercising the right granted to UNMOVIC by Security Council Resolution 1441.

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Modern Chemical Industries in Hay Babil, Baghdad. This is a private company that produces industrial alcohol, medicinal-grade alcohol, arak, whiskey and gin from dates. The company is a declared and previously monitored site due to the presence of dual-use equipment. The site was closed for Christmas holiday but access was granted to the offices, production areas and a laboratory where keys were available and the team wanted to inspect.

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors inspected the Al Rasheed Headquarters, located approximately 60 km southwest of Baghdad. The team held technical talks with the Iraqi experts of the site about site declarations, future plans and current status of solid propellant missile programmes. During the technical talks, some inspectors performed an inspection of the Administration building for this Headquarters.

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the "Al Taji Single Cell Protein (SCP) Plant", located 23 km northwest of Baghdad and within a liquid propane gas (LPG)-filling company. The name "SCP Plant" no longer exists. The plant used to be one building, which has now been remodeled for use by the LPG-filling company.

An UNMOVIC missile team inventoried storage buildings at the Al Kadhimiya Plant and at Shumouk Stores, located approximately 30 km north of Baghdad.

An UNMOVIC chemical team inspected the Basra State Establishment for Paper Industry in the Basra region.

IAEA Inspectors Starting to Interview Iraqi Scientists, 24 December 2002

In recent interviews, IAEA Spokesman Mark Gwozdecky said that the Agency's nuclear inspectors have started interviewing Iraqi nuclear scientists. "We are moving from an information-gathering phase to a more probing, investigative phase," he said in an interview with the Washington Post.

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors inspected the Al Nidaa Factory in south Baghdad. The factory makes mechanical parts and equipment for different types of missiles. Another missile team inspected the Abdul Kareem Abass Plant, located approximately 60 km south of Baghdad. This is a site newly declared in the 1 October Iraqi declaration and the only plant in Iraq, which manufactures ammonium perchlorate, the primary ingredient used in the production of solid propellant. A third missile team went to three different sites under the control of the Taji Technical Battalion.

UNMOVIC and the IAEA have carried out roughly 150 inspections up to now. Some sites were visited several times due to the size of the sites. 13 IAEA inspectors left Baghdad yesterday; two other IAEA inspectors left earlier. One UNMOVIC inspector also left yesterday. In turn, two new IAEA inspectors arrived yesterday, along with 7 new UNMOVIC inspectors. Therefore, we currently have 102 UNMOVIC inspectors and 6 IAEA inspectors, a total of 108.

One UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors inspected the Al Battanee Centre (Baghdad Space Research and Development Centre) in Baghdad. This center is a scientific group, which does space technology, space optics, atmospheric studies and remote sensing. Al Battanee provides the telemetry systems for the Al Samoud missile system. Another missile team inspected the site of the Taji Technical Battalion, located 40 km north of Baghdad. The site belongs to the Iraqi military. It is a missile storage area and a former Scud dumpsite.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 21 December 2002

A multidisciplinary UNMOVIC team carried out an inspection of the Samoud Scrap Yard site, located approximately 54 km northwest of Baghdad in the area of Tarmiya. The site belongs to the Samoud Company. The scrap in the site is sent to the Al Samoud factory to be reprocessed into steel in its heavy foundry. A multidisciplinary team of chemists, toxicologists and missile experts inspected all areas of the site.
