Activities of IAEA and UNMOVIC

The following is a summary following the press conference in Cyprus, 17 November 2002.

The Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), Dr. Hans Blix, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, arrived in Larnaca, Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, 17 November.

IAEA and Iraq: The Next Steps

United Nations Weapons Inspectorate for Iraq
The IAEA and UNMOVIC Operate With Distinct Mandates

Under the relevant Security Council Resolutions UNMOVIC and the IAEA have distinct and different mandates. Although they are separate inspection teams, the two organizations work closely together particularly in making use of UNMOVIC's logistical arrangements. UNMOVIC is responsible for the chemical, biological and missile files, while the IAEA is responsible for the nuclear file.

Press Arrangements and Accreditation form for IAEA-UNMOVIC-Iraq Talks, Vienna International Centre

Vienna, 30 September -1 October 2002

Media arrangements:

The talks on practical arrangements related to the commencement of inspections between the Iraqi Government and IAEA and UNMOVIC are scheduled to be held in Vienna on 30 September and could continue through 1 October 2002. The meeting will not be open to the media.

Media representatives will have workspace assigned to them in the CO3 press area with Internet access, laptop plug-ins, fax, and a photocopier. A separate working area will also be provided for TV crews.

Annual IAEA General Conference to Convene on 16 - 20 September

Energy Ministers and high-level delegations from the IAEA's 134 countries will come together on 16 - 20 September for the 46th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference at the Austria Centre in Vienna. A wide range of issues will be addressed in the areas of nuclear security, safeguards, safety and nuclear science and technology. Media planning to cover the General Conference are requested to fill in the accreditation form, which is available on-line at /worldatom/About/Policy/GC/gcAccredit.shtml.

Invitation to a Press Briefing with IAEA Iraq Action Team Leader Jacques Baute

Journalists accredited to the 4-5 July Iraq Talks are invited to a press briefing on the work of the IAEA in Iraq. Team Leader Jacques Baute will trace the history of Iraq's nuclear programme and provide information on preparations for a resumption of inspections.

The briefing will be on the record. Mr. Baute will not discuss or answer questions on the proceedings of the Iraq Talks.
