Second Joint IAEA-GIF Workshop on Safety Aspects of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactors

30 Nov – 1 Dec 2011
Vienna, Austria

The overall objective of the Workshop is to share information among R&D leaders of GIF and the IAEA (INPRO and the Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors) on technical issues related to the safety of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). Specific attention is given to the following aspects:

  • Lessons learned from the Fukushima-Daiichi accident, to be taken into account in the design of SFRs.
  • Harmonization of safety approaches and goals for the design of SFRs, which would contribute to the harmonization of the safety criteria utilized in GEN IV SFRs.
  • Approaches to identify technical issues relevant to the safety of SFRs, for which further investigation is deemed necessary, and current and planned R&D activities to help resolve them.
