Research Reactor Safety Section: Capacity Building Activities
The Research Reactor Safety Section provides support to Member States in building and sustaining capacity in nuclear safety.
Building and sustaining capacity
- Upon request by Member States, expert missions to Member States can be arranged for design safety, operational safety, conduct of operation, operational radiation protection and waste management, operating experience feedback, regulatory inspections for safety of research reactors at the regulatory body or the operating organization.
- The Integrated Safety Assessment of Research Reactors (INSARR) mission to Member States includes a review area of training and qualification for staff of the operating organization
- The Safety Evaluation (of Fuel Cycle Facilities) during Operation (SEDO) mission to Member States includes a review area of training and qualification for staff of the nuclear fuel cycle facilities
Education and training
- IAEA Training Resources - Research Reactors (publications and e-learning resources)
- IAEA Training Course Series publication: Regulatory Inspection of Research Reactors
- IAEA Training Course Series publication: Safety of Research Reactors
- IAEA Training Course Series publication: Operational Radiation Protection and Radioactive Waste Management for Research Reactors
Knowledge management
- The Incident Reporting System for Research Reactors (IRSRR) (login required) supports sharing of lessons learned from incidents that have occurred at research reactors
- The Fuel Incident and Notification and Analysis System (FINAS) (login required) supports the exchange of operational experience and lessons learned from incidents that have occurred at nuclear fuel cycle facilities
- The Research Reactor Database supports sharing most pertinent and up-to-date information about research reactors
- The Research Reactor Ageing Management Database (login required) supports sharing of Member States experience in resolving and overcoming ageing issues
- The Research Reactor Material Properties Database (login required) facilitates the assessment of life of the core structural components and planning refurbishment or replacement of such components
