Advanced reactor designs and technologies are under development in over 20 Member States for immediate and near-term deployment, offering clean energy options to mitigate climate change in both developed and developing economies. Technology advances contribute to the economic competitiveness, enhanced reliability, high efficiency and robust safety performance of innovative reactors.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are advanced generation reactors designed to produce typically up to 300 MW(e). They are considered particularly suitable for small electrical grids, remote areas, non-electric applications and as replacements for ageing fossil fuel plants.

The IAEA supports Member States in the development and deployment of SMRs, recognizing their potential as a viable solution for ensuring energy supply security. Balanced and objective information on technology status and development trends for advanced reactor lines and their applications are collected, assessed and provided through status reports and other technical documents.

To provide Member States with a concise overview of the latest SMR designs, the IAEA has published booklets on the status of SMR technology developments every two years since 2011, as a supplement to the IAEA Advanced Reactors Information System (ARIS), a web-accessible database that provides comprehensive, up-to-date information about advanced nuclear plant designs and concepts.

This Webinar will present the new IAEA-ARIS booklet on SMRs, report on progress made by SMR technology frontrunners and provide an overview of the advances in global SMR designs and technologies.
