Interested parties have until 30 April 2018 to submit synopses for oral, interactive content or poster presentations at the International Conference on the Security of Radioactive Material: The Way Forward for Prevention and Detection, to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 3 to 7 December 2018.
The conference will provide a forum for Member States to share experiences, including difficulties encountered, lessons learned and good practices related to the implementation of three IAEA Nuclear Security Series publications on radioactive material. The conference will also highlight experiences with the implementation of relevant international instruments, such as the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources.
The conference targets professionals with responsibility for policy, technical and legal aspects of nuclear security, as well as other experts interested in nuclear security.
“This unique forum will bring together experts dealing with the protection of radioactive material against unauthorized removal and sabotage with those responsible for detection of such material if it is lost, missing or stolen,” said Senior Nuclear Security Officer Thierry Pelletier, co-scientific secretary of the conference, who deals with materials outside regulatory control.
“This will enable an exchange of perspectives and experiences that we expect will result in better understanding and collaboration. In this way, the conference will contribute to the sustainability of national nuclear security regimes,” added Nuclear Security Officer Alessia Rodriguez y Baena, the other scientific secretary dealing with the security of radioactive materials.
Ndèye Arame Boye Faye, Director General of the Senegalese Authority for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, will take part in the conference, which is expected to attract more than 300 participants.
“The combination of detection and protection experts at the same conference will certainly bring new insights, and I think this will help bring about improvements in my country and elsewhere,” she said.
The IAEA is seeking presentations in the implementation of
- Nuclear Security Recommendations on Radioactive Material and Associated Facilities (IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 14)
- Nuclear Security Recommendations on Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material out of Regulatory Control (IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 15)
- Objective and Essential Elements of a State's Nuclear Security Regime (IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 20)
The conference sessions will cover the following themes: securing radioactive material from cradle to grave; detecting radioactive material involved in criminal/unauthorized acts; strengthening domestic interfaces and leveraging existing capabilities for keeping material under control and for detecting such material when out of regulatory control; facilitating international cooperation in supporting the efforts of states to fulfil their responsibilities to ensure the security of radioactive material; strengthening sustainability and effectiveness of nuclear security regimes related to security of radioactive material and nuclear security detection architecture. The IAEA welcomes synopses on any of these theme.
