Technical Working Group on Nuclear Power Infrastructure (TWG-NPI)

The Technical Working Group on Nuclear Power Infrastructure (TWG-NPI) is a group of experts constituted to provide advice to the IAEA in support of the development and implementation of national nuclear power programmes.

The members of TWG-NPI come from Member States with operating or expanding nuclear power programmes and those considering or starting such programmes. They are appointed by the IAEA Deputy Director General, Head of Department of Nuclear Energy, following consultation with the respective national authorities and relevant organizations in these Member States.

Scope and Functions

The work of the TWG-NPI is focused on challenges related to the development and implementation of national nuclear power programmes and gives due recognition to all relevant aspects of nuclear power infrastructure development as described in relevant IAEA documents for the introduction of nuclear power.

The TWG-NPI assists the IAEA in the evaluation of experience gained from its support activities and review missions, as well as of feedback received on the use of IAEA documents, and provides advice on the adjustment and optimization of the IAEA’s actions and approaches accordingly. It shares information on developments and activities in Member States, including on bilateral assistance and national efforts, and explores ways of coordinating IAEA and other assistance.

The TWG-NPI’s recommendations, following its annual meetings, contribute to ensuring the development of sound, shared and comprehensive guidance to interested Member States based on best practices in infrastructure development for national nuclear power programmes.

To further enhance its utility and effectiveness, the TWG-NPI interacts, through the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy, with the Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Energy (SAGNE), the International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO), the Technical Working Group on Managing Human Resources in the Field of Nuclear Energy (TWG-MHR), the Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options and Spent Fuel Management, the International Radioactive Waste Technical Committee (WATEC), and other IAEA advisory groups, as well as advisory groups outside of the IAEA, on relevant nuclear power infrastructure related topics.
