Webinar on Physical Protection Measures and Systems
Background
The physical protection of nuclear material and nuclear facilities is a major part of the national nuclear security regime for those States that have such material and facilities. A physical protection system (PPS) includes interior and exterior intrusion detection sensors, cameras for assessment, delay measures, access control devices and response measures.
Within the framework of a series of webinars highlighting the relevant IAEA Nuclear Security Series (NSS) publications that assist States in the technical implementation of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its 2005 Amendment, this webinar will focus specifically on NSS No. 40-T Handbook on the Design of Physical Protection Systems for Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities, published in 2021.
NSS No. 40-T provides comprehensive detailed guidance for States, competent authorities and operators on how to implement the recommendations and implementing guidance of existing NSS publications for an effective PPS for nuclear facilities and nuclear materials in use and storage. It provides further technical detail on how to design and evaluate a PPS, with respect to the selection and integration of appropriate, effective physical protection measures (including equipment).
A Physical Protection System (PPS) is defined as “An integrated set of physical protection measures intended to prevent the completion of a malicious act”, IAEA Nuclear Security Series, No. 13 Nuclear Security Recommendations on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities (INFCIRC/225/Revision 5).
Objectives
This webinar will provide an overview of the application of PPS and equipment in nuclear security, with an emphasis on NSS No. 13 Nuclear Security Recommendations on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities (INFCIRC/225/Revision 5) and NSS No. 40-T.
