UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC biological team performed aerial inspections over a number of sites for the first time. These sites involved Falluja II and III, the Agricultural and Biological Research Centre, Tuwaitha and former biological research facilities at Salman Park.

An UNMOVIC chemical team inspected the commercial headquarters of the Agricultural Supply Company in Baghdad. This company is involved in receiving and distributing agricultural chemicals.

UNMOVIC sought two more private interviews today. In both cases, the Iraqi individuals requested to be interviewed in private showed up with a person at the agreed hotel and insisted on having the individual with them during an interview. Consequently, no private interviews took place.

Clarification of Reuters Press Report.

The IAEA would like to clarify the misleading headline of a Reuters news report dated 30 January. The headline, "IAEA’s ElBaradei says Iraq not in material breach", is not an accurate summary of the actual quotations in the story. At the request of the IAEA, Reuters issued a correction entitled "IAEA says seen no gross violation in Iraq as yet."

The IAEA has a clear responsibility under Resolution 1441 to report to the Security Council, but deciding on whether Iraq is in material breach is, as Dr. ElBaradei has repeatedly emphasised, the Council's prerogative.

Correction: As of yesterday, UNMOVIC submitted a total of 16 requests for a private interview, involving 13 Iraqi individuals. 3 individuals were requested to be interviewed in private once before the 10-point agreement of 20 January and once afterwards. (The press statement yesterday had a wrong number for individuals involved.)

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

UNMOVIC requested one further private interview with an Iraqi individual on Sunday, 26 January. The individual concerned showed up with an Iraqi official at Al Hayat Hotel yesterday, but a private interview did not take place, as he insisted on having a witness with him. UNMOVIC requested another private interview yesterday. It did not take place today, either, as the individual concerned insisted on having a witness with him. To date, UNMOVIC has requested to interview in private 16 Iraqi individuals, but no private interviews have taken place so far.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC missile team flew by helicopter to the Az Zubayr Naval Complex, 300 km south of Baghdad. The missile team was accompanied by members of the chemical team during the inspection of the naval facilities. A second missile team traveled approximately 130 km south of Baghdad to witness a static test of the Al Samoud missile engine at the Al Rafah Liquid Engine Test Facility.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the National Project to Control and Combat the Cattle Plague in Baghdad. Another biological team inspected the Chest and Respiratory Diseases Institute in Baghdad. This Institute was formerly known as Tuberculosis Institute (TB Institute). The Centre undertakes diagnosis and primary treatment of respiratory diseases.

An UNMOVIC chemical team went to the Al Basil Centre, Nahrawan, located in Baghdad. The Centre develops the projects of the Al Basil Centre, Jadriyah (Headquarters) to the pilot plant stage.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

UNMOVIC requested yesterday further interviews with Iraqi personnel in private. Two individuals concerned did not agree to it without the presence of a witness. Thus, the interviews did not take place today. UNMOVIC will continue to seek interviews in private, as allowed in Security Council resolution 1441.
