Women comprise less than a quarter of professionals working in the nuclear industry, and make up less than 30% of scientific researchers, globally. Experts agree that such gender disparity hurts the sector by reducing competition, stifling innovation and limiting the diversity of thought. To promote greater participation in the nuclear field by women in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL) and the IAEA have been supporting the establishment of a new, regional chapter of Women in Nuclear (WiN).
To facilitate the founding of a regional WiN chapter, a unique project was launched early in 2020 through the ARCAL regional agreement. The first of its kind, the regional project aims to support equal female participation in nuclear science and technology by empowering women and promoting their contribution to technical, scientific and leadership roles in the field. The new project also builds atop the achievements of previous IAEA efforts in the region to prepare young, female professionals for leadership responsibilities and to act as ‘nuclear advocates’ in their respective national institutions.
In collaboration with Stand Up for Nuclear, an independent nuclear advocacy group, the counterparts of this WiN ARCAL project will hold their first event on 12 September at a remote meeting and panel discussion entitled, “Women in Nuclear: Conquering Spaces in Latin America and the Caribbean.” The event will benefit from the participation of IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and of the recently-elected WiN Global Vice-President, Melina Belinco.
