New Video: Moldova’s Journey Towards Nuclear Security

At a seemingly peaceful crossing on the Moldova-Romania border, an important job is taking place. Each vehicle must drive through a radiation detection portal, something you might not notice if you weren’t told. When the alarm sounds, customs officers spring into action, documenting any undeclared material. Thankfully, on this day, it was only a drill.

This video depicts an IAEA-supported, state-run testing programme for the detection of unregistered radioactive material that could be used for malicious purposes, such as a “dirty bomb”. Countries like Moldova have been working closely with the Agency to strengthen its capacity to combat this potential security threat. Essential training and equipment has been provided by the IAEA to help member states get out in front of smuggling before it becomes a very real problem. As time goes on, Moldova will continue with their journey towards a more functional, modern nuclear security apparatus.
