A national workshop focusing on the international legal frameworks for nuclear safety and civil liability for nuclear damage was conducted on in August in Islamabad, at the request of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The workshop aimed to enhance understanding and promote the importance of adhering to key international conventions adopted under IAEA auspices in the areas of nuclear safety and liability. The workshop was attended by over 30 participants from institutions such as the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, and National Command Authority.
During bilateral discussions, the PNRA Chairman, Faizan Mansoor said: “This workshop is of a critical importance for a deeper understanding of the international legal instruments in the area of nuclear safety and civil liability for nuclear damage. It is a significant step for the cooperation between the IAEA and the country in the area of nuclear law.”
This workshop focused on the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management and the relevant international instruments on nuclear liability, in particular, the 1997 Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage and the 1997 Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage.
The workshop followed a virtual IAEA workshop on nuclear liability held in October 2020.
This event was carried out within the framework of the IAEA Legislative Assistance Programme under the Interregional Technical Cooperation Project for Legislative Assistance. The event was also conducted with the financial support of the extrabudgetary funds provided to the Office of Legal Affairs by the United States of America and extrabudgetary funds provided by the United States of America under the project "Promote and Enhance Implementation of the Legal Instruments Relevant to Radioactive Waste and Sources".
