The Agency´s public website, IAEA.org, was selected as one of three winners of the 2006 Web4Dev Awards at a video conference ceremony held 21 June 2006 which linked participants from Bonn, Geneva, London, New York, Vienna, and Washington D.C. The event was also broadcast simultaneously over the internet.
The 2006 Web4Dev Awards is sponsored by the World Bank and was presented to recognize excellence in website design and management. The IAEA shared this honour with two other U.N. organizations, ReliefWeb, based in Geneva, Switzerland and the UN Volunteers, based in Bonn, Germany. The World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva and the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo, Japan both received Honourable Mentions.
Web4Dev, short for Web for Development, is a network of 88 UN, private and non-governmental organizations making use of the web for development-related work. At the last conference in May 2005, the World Bank offered to sponsor the 2006 Web4Dev Awards to recognize examples of exemplary work within the Web4Dev community. Some 26 organizations of the Web4Dev community participated in the competition, from which the panel of judges selected three winners and two honourable mentions. Criteria included, among others, quality of content, visual design, layout/navigation, site architecture and interactivity.
A longer technical analysis of the winning web sites will be addressed at the upcoming 2006 Web4Dev Conference tentatively scheduled for November at UN headquarters in New York.
