IAEA-Supported ICTP Contributes to Physics Breakthrough

Scientists at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) contributed to a discovery announced this week by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

ICTP physicists are supporting CERN's ATLAS experiment that examines particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider.

The ATLAS experiment detected a new high energy, sub-atomic particle that appears to confirm the existence of the long-sought Higgs boson particle, which is foreseen by a theory, the "Standard Model" of particle physics, that describes matter, its origins, and some of the basic forces in nature, such as mass.

Italy, UNESCO and the IAEA sponsor the ICTP through a tripartite agreement and are partners in its mission to enhance developing world scientists' expertise in physics and mathematics.
