The IAEA Board of Governors concluded its second meeting of the year on 6 June 2012 after discussing a number of key issues at the Agency's headquarters.
The Board discussed the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety; application of safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement and Relevant Provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran; Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic; the Safeguards Implementation Report for 2011; and the Annual Report for 2011.
The designation of members to serve on the Board in 2012-2013 was also considered, as well as applications for membership to the Agency, and the Provisional Agenda for the September 2012 session of the General Conference.
The Board elected a new Chairman for the unexpired term of office for 2011-2012. He is Mr. Filippo Formica, who succeeds the Governor of Italy, Mr. Gianni Ghisi.
