IAEA General Conference Appoints Martha Delgado Peralta of Mexico as President of its Special Session

Martha Delgado Peralta from Mexico has been appointed as President of the Special Session of the IAEA General Conference which opened in Vienna today to approve the appointment of Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina as the next IAEA Director General.

Ms Delgado Peralta is the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she is responsible for the relations with the United Nations System, as well as other international organizations.

She is a recognized environmentalist leader at the national and international levels and has over 28 years of professional experience in various areas of national public service and within the civil society non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental matters and human right, such as Global Cities Covenant on Climate at Fundación PENSAR. She has been an independent member of the Mexico City congress and Secretary of the Environment for Mexico City’s government.

Ms Delgado Peralta has also served on the boards and advisory committees of various international and multilateral organizations and has led global networks on urban and environmental issues. She is currently the President of the first UN-Habitat Assembly (2019-2023), and serves as Sherpa for the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (2019-2020), on behalf of Mexico.

Ms Delgado Peralta received a certificate in Environmental Policy and International Development from Harvard University (2017). She has written numerous scientific articles and has published opinion pieces in nationally recognized newspapers such as El Universal, El Economista, Milenio, Este País and Foreign Affairs Magazine.
