IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano visited Berlin, Germany, on 26 August 2013. During his visit, at the invitation of German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Guido Westerwelle, the Director General attended a Conference of German Ambassadors and briefed them on the broad work of the Agency.
In addressing Ambassadors, the Director General Amano noted that Germany has been a major player in the IAEA right from its foundation. He gave assurance that the Agency would continue to work closely with the German authorities, learning from Germany's experiences, in areas such as decommissioning and waste disposal, as well as in strengthening global efforts on nuclear safety and security, and non-proliferation.
The Director General also had meetings with Minister Westerwelle, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics and Technology, Mr. Stefan Kapferer, as well as senior officials from the Federal Chancellery, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry for the Environment, to discuss issues related to non-proliferation, nuclear security, nuclear safety, and the peaceful uses of nuclear technologies.
