IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano commended the United Kingdom for its support of the Agency’s work, particularly in the areas of nuclear security and applications, during a two-day visit to London this week.

Mr Amano held talks with senior officials including Boris Johnson, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Jesse Norman, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Industry and Energy.

They discussed the role of nuclear science and technology in the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and strengthening the collaboration between the IAEA and the UK.

Mr Amano drew attention to the IAEA’s role in safeguards, its verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as well as his concerns about the nuclear programme of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Mr Amano also thanked the UK for its £7.1 million (EUR 8.4 million) contribution to the IAEA Nuclear Security Fund in March 2016 and its support for the modernization of the IAEA Nuclear Applications Laboratories.
