The IAEA Board of Governors began its first meeting of the year on 4 March 2013 at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano opened the meeting with an introductory statement and conducted a Press Conference for journalists at 14:30. The full text of the statement can be accessed here.
The 35-nation Board will discuss a number of issues, including: strengthening the Agency's activities related to nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety; strengthening the Agency's activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications; nuclear verification; the conclusion of safeguards agreements and of additional protocols; Application of Safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement and Relevant Provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolutions in the Islamic Republic of Iran; and Implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic.
As part of these discussions, a number of documents will be reviewed by the Board, including the Nuclear Safety Review 2013; Progress in the Implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety; and the Nuclear Technology Review 2013.
