Impact Review in Mozambique

The ImPACT Review in Mozambique began with a visit to Maputo Central Hospital. At the hospital, one radiotherapy unit is available for 26 000 annual cancer cases.The team were shown around by Nareiso Sitox, one of the radiation oncologists at the hospital trained under the IAEA technical cooperation programme.On Day two of the mission, the imPACT Review team met with officers at the Ministry of Health. Working groups discussed cancer control coordination in terms of Mozambique’s National Cancer Control Plan, non-communicable diseases, imaging/radiotherapy action, planning and financing.During the afternoon, the imPACT Review team met with UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank and UN Women. The meeting gave the team the chance to discuss preliminary findings and synergies with partner UN organizations in Mozambique. The imPACT Review Team also visited Primary Health Care Centre Primeiro Maio and Mavalane General Hospital in Maputo. At Primerio Maio, the imPACT Review team had the chance to learn more about the scope of services in primary care, such as prevention and early detection.The experts also met with two civil society organizations Associação de Luta Contra o Cancro (ALCC) and Associação Moçambicana de Cuidados Paliativos (MOPCA) that promote cancer control and palliative care in Mozambique.The visit in Maputo concluded as the experts from the imPACT Review Mission met with HIV-Aids programme managers to exchange information.The team worked late into the night to finalize their reports before heading to Nampula, a city in northern Mozambique around 2000 km by road from Maputo.Once in Nampula, one group of experts headed to Nampula Central Hospital and the PHC Facility to assess the cancer control situation.Another team headed to Nacala, a city on the northern coast of Mozambique, where Health Minister Armindo Daniel Tiago was meeting with representatives of Mozambican provinces and Ministry of Health senior managers was taking place.Once arrived, IAEA public health expert Karagu Maina debriefed the Health Minister Armindo Daniel Tiago on the imPACT Team Reviews key findings.With support from the <br /><br /> <strong>IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation</strong> <br /> and the <br /> <strong>IAEA Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications</strong> <br /><br /> Photos and captions: <br /> <strong>Emma Midgley, IAEA Office of Public Information and Communication</strong>
