UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq. 08 January 2003

2003/0801

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors returned to the Al Mamoun Plant of the Al Rasheed State Company for the third day in a row. Some members of the team tagged solid propellant motors of the Al Fatah rockets. Other members of the team went to the propellant production area to witness the casting of solid propellant into an Al Fatah motor case. This was the second time in two weeks that the missile team witnessed propellant production activities at the site. The first observation took place on 31 December. A number of technical questions regarding Iraq’s missile production capabilities were addressed during discussions with the site’s experts.

An UNMOVIC chemical team returned to Falluja II, located approximately 100 km northwest of Baghdad, to inspect storage buildings and to seek clarifications on several issues. This facility is a chemical plant and was last inspected by the chemical team on 17 December.

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Saddam College of Medicine at Saddam University in northwest Baghdad. The College educates students to become medical doctors and carries out research.

An UNMOVIC multidisciplinary team inspected the Mechanical Workshop of the Al Nasr State Company for the Maintenance of Irrigation Projects.

A Mosul-based multidisciplinary team inspected the Nineveh Drug Industry in the Mosul area. The team then continued on to a daughter company, the Nineveh Factory for Intravenous Drugs Production, where it conducted a follow-up inspection.

The IAEA inspected three sites: the Kufa (Qufaa) Cement Plant (240 km south of Baghdad), the Samawa Cement Plant (350 km south of Baghdad), and the Karbala Cement Plant (250 km southwest of Baghdad).
