News Update on Iraq Inspections

2003/1201

A joint IAEA and UNMOVIC chemical team flew by helicopter approximately 240 km northwest of Baghdad to inspect the Sharqat EMIS Facility. The site was originally designed to house an Electromagnetic Isotope Separation Facility (EMIS). Presently, a factory operated by the Al Hadhin State Company produces concentrated nitric acid on the site. This was the first air-born operation in which a MI8-MTV heavy-load helicopter was used, along with two Bell-212 helicopters. The first two air-borne operations used Bell-212 helicopters. The MI8 carried one vehicle for the team.

An UNMOVIC missile team observed a static test of an Al Samoud engine at the Al Rafah Liquid Engine Test Facility, 130 km south of Baghdad. Another missile team went to Al Mutaseem, 90 km south of Baghdad, to observe another static test. It was the test of an Al Uboor motor, which is a solid propellant motor that Iraq plans to use in a ground-to-air missile system. The third missile team traveled to Basra to tag the Al Farah missiles at one of the Iraqi units some 25 km north of Basra.

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Department of Microbiology of the College of Medicine, Baghdad University. The principal activity of the Department is to teach third-year medical students basic microbiology and parasitology. Another team inspected the College of Pharmacy, Baghdad University. The third team visited the Technical Military Depot for the Air Force, Al Taji, as a follow-up to the previous inspection, which had taken place on 2 January.

A Mosul-based multidisciplinary team inspected the Jaber Ben Hayan State Establishment in Mosul. The company is a producer of chemical protection equipment.
