UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq
News Update on Iraq Inspections
An UNMOVIC multidisciplinary team returned to the Ukhaider Ammunition Storage Area to conduct further analysis of the 12th warhead found at the site on 16 January. The team took additional samples from the warhead and resealed the warhead and the storage building.
Another multidisciplinary team visited the Al-Numan General Company, a manufacturing plant in the vicinity of Baghdad, which is specialized in finishing plastic and metal parts. The status of current activities of the plant was assessed.
An UNMOVIC missile team went this morning to the Al Rasheed Air Base in anticipation of flying by helicopter to a site deep inside the northern No-Fly-Zone. UNMOVIC had to cancel the mission for safety reasons, due to the insistence by the Iraqi side to fly their helicopter into the No-Fly-Zone following UNMOVIC’s helicopters.
An UNMOVIC chemical team went to the Al Qa Qaa complex and conducted a survey employing multi-frequency electromagnetic detectors.
An UNMOVIC biological team visited three colleges at Kufa University in Kufa, approximately 150 km south of Baghdad. The team inspected the Microbiology Department of the College of Medicine, the College of Science, and the Biology Department of the College of Education for Women.
Another biological team inspected the State Company for Foodstuff Trading under the Ministry of Trade in Baghdad. The team inspected the quality control laboratories as well as two mobile laboratories declared by Iraq.
A Mosul-based multidisciplinary team inspected a textile factory in Mosul.
The IAEA inspected two sites: the University of Baghdad in Baghdad and the Tuwaitha site, 24 km east of Baghdad. For the University of Baghdad, two colleges were inspected: the College of Science (Ibn Al Haytham Campus) and the College of Education (Jaderia). A motorized survey was performed on the Tuwaitha site.
A multidisciplinary team based in Mosul visited yesterday the General Establishment for Extractional Operations (the former Al Jesira uranium oxide and uranium tetrachloride production plant) in the outskirts of Mosul. The plant is now producing ferrous sulfate and until recently iron oxide. The plant is also handling and manufacturing a low number of commodity chemicals.
