News Briefing on International Experts' Meeting on Reactor and Spent Fuel Safety

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been hosting a four-day International Experts' Meeting on Reactor and Spent Fuel Safety in the Light of the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant from 19 to 22 March to provide a forum for discussions and exchange of information among technical experts from Member States on reactor and spent nuclear fuel safety and performance under severe conditions. The meeting is an important component of the IAEA's Nuclear Safety Action Plan.

The primary objectives of the Meeting are to: review what is known to date about the accident to fully understand its root causes; share with the international community lessons learned from the accident; and discuss issues related to the analysis of relevant technical aspects of reactor and nuclear fuel safety in light of the lessons learned.

Additional meeting information may be found at IAEA Meetings.

To wrap up the meeting, the IAEA will offer a news briefing on 22 March, at 10:30 in Board Room A of the VIC.

Speakers at the briefing will include Denis Flory, IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Safety and Security, and the meeting's chairperson, Richard A. Meserve, president of the Carnegie Institution for Science based in Washington. In addition, the two co-chairs, Jacques Repussard, Director General of France's Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), and S. K. Chande, Vice Chairman of India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), will also be available for questions.
