IAEA, Japan to hold the Fukushima Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety

Japan, in co-sponsorship with the IAEA, will hold the Fukushima Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety in Fukushima Prefecture on 15-17 December 2012. The principal objective of the Conference is to contribute to strengthening nuclear safety worldwide by sharing lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident.

Participants will discuss the progress of international efforts aimed at strengthening nuclear safety, including through the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, as well as of measures to protect people and the environment from ionizing radiation.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will take part in the meeting, which will consist of a plenary at ministerial level, expert working sessions and a closing plenary. All sessions will be open to the media and will also be webcast live.

Journalists wishing to cover the meeting must follow procedures for media accreditation specified by the Japanese government. The deadline is 20 November 2012.
