IAEA to Inaugurate Nuclear Material Laboratory in Seibersdorf

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will host a ceremony to inaugurate the IAEA's new Nuclear Material Laboratory at the Agency's Seibersdorf facility on Monday, 23 September 2013, at 14:30.

The laboratory is an essential component of the Agency's safeguards activities, as it analyses material sampled by safeguards inspectors from nuclear fuel cycle processes. The new building, which began construction in 2011, replaces an aging building which no longer meets the needs of the IAEA.

Director General Amano will join the Chairman of the IAEA Board of Governors and a representative of the Austrian government in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the main door of the new building.

Journalists will have a photo opportunity at the ceremony, and will be able to tour the new facility, but for security reasons will not be permitted to take photographs or video images inside the building.

The Director General will make short remarks, which will be posted later on-line. He will not take questions or conduct a News Conference.

All journalists wishing to attend the ceremony must register with the IAEA Press Office by 09:30 on Monday, 23 September 2013. Journalists should park at the site's main gate and walk roughly 400 metres to the ceremony site. Alternatively, those with camera equipment may park within the compound, but must register their names and vehicle licence plate numbers with the IAEA Press Office by 16:00 on Friday, 20 September 2013.

The laboratory is approximately 45 minutes from Vienna by car. Please contact the IAEA Press Office for directions if required.

Journalists are asked to display their VIC press credentials while covering the ceremony, and to remain at the ceremony site.

All journalists, even those with permanent accreditation to the VIC, must seek accreditation by contacting Jayne Stringer (telephone [+43-1] 2600-21279 / [+43-1] 2600-21273 or e-mail: [email protected]) by 09:30 on Monday, 23 September 2013. If you wish to park inside the compound, please provide the names of the passengers along with your vehicle license plate number by 16:00 on Friday. If you wish to park outside the main gate at Seibersdorf please let us know by 09:30 on Monday.

You are required to bring a valid press ID card.
