ElBaradei to deliver Commencement Speech at the Fletcher School at Tufts University

2003/70

In his speech at the 18 May commencement ceremony at the prestigious Fletcher School at Tufts University in Boston, IAEA Director General Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei will call on the graduating class to become globally engaged in an increasingly interconnected world.

In his speech, Dr. ElBaradei will address today’s new dangers and challenges ranging from ethnic conflicts to terrorism and the further proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. He will talk about how nuclear weapons have continued to have a position of prominence as the currency of ultimate power, and that the objectives embodied in the landmark Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) are under growing stress. He will outline his vision for collective global security, in which international law is the organizing principle.

At 10:40 a.m., prior to his formal remarks before Fletcher School graduates, Dr. ElBaradei will meet with interested media registered with Tufts for the event. For more information on media registration visit the Tufts website: http://enews.tufts.edu/stories/051803ElBaradei.htm.

Copies of Dr. ElBaradei’s speech will be available as of 17:00 (CET) on the IAEA website: www.iaea.org, and on the Tufts website at the above address.

During his trip to Boston, Dr. ElBaradei will also address students and faculty at Harvard University as well as members of the Boston Bar Association.
