Technical Meeting on Lessons Learned from Removals of Category 1 and 2 Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources and Strategies to Improve Removal of Unique Devices

11 – 15 Dec 2023
Virtual event
Vienna, Austria
Event code: EVT2205661

Sealed radioactive sources (SRSs) are used extensively in agriculture, industry, medicine, and various research areas in around the world.  Almost all countries utilize SRSs in some manner. With the trends in end-users transitioning to non-radioisotope alternatives, the demand for the decommissioning and removal of Category 1 and 2 sources has increased in recent years.

The IAEA is organizing a Technical Meeting on Lessons Learned from Removals of Category 1 and 2 Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources and Strategies to Improve Removal of Unique Devices virtually via Cisco Webex from 11-15 December 2023. This meeting will discuss lessons learned on removing Category 1 and 2 Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) from the end-user (e.g. hospital, industry, research institute, radioactive waste management organization), the regulatory body, and the contractors removing these devices. These can be used to inform best practices that can improve processes in terms of safety, security, and performing removals within different regulatory frameworks as well as challenges with different management options of DSRS.

In order to be designated by an IAEA Member State or invited organization, participants are requested to submit their application via the InTouch+ platform (https://intouchplus.iaea.org) to the competent national authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission to the IAEA or National Atomic Energy Authority) or organization for onward transmission to the IAEA by 30 November 2023
