Technical Meeting on Next Generation Reactors and Emergency Preparedness and Response

6 – 9 Apr 2020
Vienna, Austria
Event code: EVT1805598

The purpose of this Technical Meeting is to build on the success of the 2017 Technical Meeting by presenting progress and recent developments in emergency preparedness and response (EPR) for next generation reactors (NGRs), including small modular reactors (SMRs), transportable nuclear power plants (TNPPs) and other advanced reactor designs. The aim is also to discuss potential IAEA technical guidance on EPR for NGRs, as well as off-site EPR arrangements for NGRs, with a focus on designs/technologies already deployed or soon to be deployed.

The meeting is a forum to exchange views about the formulation of adequate EPR arrangements for NGRs among:

  • EPR experts
  • Developers of NGR technologies
  • Safety assessment experts on hazard assessment methodologies for NGRs
  • Nuclear EPR and safety professionals from nuclear power plant design and operating organizations
  • Regulatory bodies
  • Technical and supporting organizations

Participants are invited to share their views and experiences through presentations on topics related to aspects of EPR for NGRs that may include:

  • Nature, scope, and potential graded approach to determine off-site EPR arrangements for NGRs
  • Areas in which IAEA guidance is needed
  • Hazard assessment, considering safety features of these new reactors
  • Results of research, design developments, regulatory efforts, and operating experiences for EPR of NGRs

Through presentations and discussion sessions, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the meeting summary report to identify future IAEA activities in this field. The IAEA will use the insights obtained in this Technical Meeting, together with results of related ongoing work, to propose and develop guidance for an EPR series publication on EPR for NGRs.
