IAEA Competition: Innovative Data Visualization of Operating Nuclear Power Plants

The IAEA is inviting students and early career professionals in fields relating to the operation of nuclear power plants to take part in its competition for innovative and original data visualizations that can help enhance plant life management. The competition calls for visualizations that convey the current status, challenges, opportunities or successes related to the ageing and maintenance of operating nuclear power plants. The deadline for submissions is Friday, 30 September 2022. Competition finalists will be invited to present their designs at the Fifth International Conference on Nuclear Power Plant Life Management (PLiM), to be held in Vienna, Austria from 28 November to 2 December 2022.

Participants under the age of 35 are asked to use data from The IAEA Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) Database to create an electronic static or dynamic poster, or another form of data visualization such as a heat map, animation or mobile application. The submissions should be suitable for use in print or online as well as for social media. While submissions may be accompanied by a short summary of maximum 250 words, the summary should not be required to understand the visual.

“The competition promotes creative thinking and broadens awareness about plant life management challenges and opportunities,” said Ed Bradley, Team Leader for Nuclear Power Plant Operation and Engineering Support at the IAEA. “Effective decisions are based on accurate and comprehensive data, and when this data is visualised in a way that conveys not only relevance but meaning and impact – in the best case, visualisations that tell the story of what is happening – this enables nuclear power plant operators, policymakers and other key stakeholders to make wise, informed decisions to preserve and prolong the operation of this low emission energy generation technology.”

Submitted visuals will be scored on originality, creativity of design, use of PRIS data, and effectiveness of communicating the current status, challenges, opportunities, or successes of ageing management and plant life management of operating nuclear power plants. The winning submissions will be considered for use in various PRIS-related outreach and communication activities related to nuclear power plant life management.

PRIS – a comprehensive and authoritative nuclear power database

PRIS, developed and maintained by the IAEA for over five decades, is a comprehensive database focusing on nuclear power plants worldwide. PRIS contains information on power reactors in operation, under construction, and those being decommissioned. All information and data items are collected by the IAEA via data providers nominated by national governments. That makes PRIS the only publicly available, comprehensive and official nuclear power database in the world.

The database includes reactor specification data such as status, location, operator, owner, suppliers, milestone dates and technical design characteristics; and performance data including energy production and energy loss data, outage and operational event information.

Monthly production and power loss data have been recorded in PRIS since 1970 and are complemented by information on nuclear-power generated energy provided to non-electrical applications, such as district heating, process heat supply or desalination. PRIS also provides information relating to the decommissioning process of shutdown units.

A set of internationally accepted performance indicators has been developed for calculations with PRIS data. The indicators can be used for benchmarking, international comparison or for analyses of nuclear power availability and reliability according to reactor type, country or worldwide. The analyses can, in turn, be applied to evaluations of nuclear power’s competitiveness compared to other power sources.
