The IAEA conducts Operational Safety Review missions (OSARTs) on request to enhance the operational safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs) by reviewing their operational activities, using the IAEA safety standards as a basis. Lessons learned from the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan led Member States to request such missions more frequently, and the Agency to improve the OSART guidelines to strengthen the focus on areas such as severe accident management and safety culture.
A.2. Enhancing the operational safety review services for nuclear power plants
Outcome
- Improved OSART safety review services that incorporate the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi accident. In line with the new Guidelines, the improved services systematically address the areas of leadership and management for safety, accident management and human, technology and organization interaction.
