IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco Turn 60

The IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco will be celebrating their 60th anniversary on Thursday, 30 September 2021.

These unique research facilities within the United Nations system were created to provide IAEA Member States with the tools and knowledge necessary to understand and tackle pressing marine environmental challenges. Since 1961, the IAEA Environment Laboratories have advanced and enhanced the use of nuclear applications to inform evidence-based strategies for the sustainable management of the marine environment. The occasion of this 60th anniversary presents an opportunity to recognize the generosity of the Principality of Monaco in hosting them, to take stock of achievements to date, and to consider new opportunities for the IAEA in the future, especially in light of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

The IAEA will organize a number of onsite and offsite events to commemorate the Laboratories’ 60th anniversary including:

  • A hybrid event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the IAEA Environment Laboratories hosted at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on 30 September 2021.
  • A photo exhibition focusing on major milestones, projects and achievements of the IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco, showcasing its contribution to ocean conservation, to be inaugurated and displayed at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, on 30 September 2021.
  • A film presenting how nuclear science provides a unique lens into the ocean processes and help bridge the gap between science and policy making.
  • A reception with presence of VIP guest to commemorate the occasion on 30 September 2021.
  • A tour to IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco by Vienna based Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives of Member States on 1 October 2021.
