Technical Cooperation side events at the 59th IAEA General Conference

General Conference 59

The 59th regular session of the IAEA General Conference is taking place 14 -18 September at the Vienna International Centre. Numerous events and exhibitions are being held on the margins to raise awareness of the wide range of IAEA activities and services. In addition to a sizeable exhibition, the Department of Technical Cooperation (TC) will hold four side events (two jointly with the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications) on the margins of the Conference.

On Tuesday, 15 September, the Department of Technical Cooperation will host a side event titled 'Atoms for Peace and Development: The IAEA and the Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals'. Panellists will explore the relationship between the IAEA's development activities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the role of science, technology and innovation in socioeconomic development.

On Wednesday 16 September, the third day of the General Conference, a side event hosted jointly by the Department of Technical Cooperation and the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications will launch a cancer staging mobile phone application developed by the Agency's Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging Section. Cancer staging is a process that determines the extent to which a cancer has developed or spread, and accurate staging is essential if patients are to receive appropriate care. The new cancer staging application brings key information to the phones of diagnosing doctors.

Also on Wednesday 16 September, the IAEA's Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy is organizing a side event which aims to advocate for increased global action on cancer in the Post 2015 global health agenda. Entitled 'The Future We Want: Comprehensive Cancer Control in the Post-2015 Agenda', the event has been organized with the goal of promoting improved access to equitable, affordable and quality health care.

Finally, as part of the celebrations of the 2015 International Year of Soils, a side event has been organized to highlight the work of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division and the IAEA's technical cooperation programme in supporting soil and water management for climate-smart agriculture. A panel of high-level speakers have been invited to share their experience in working to counteract land degradation in Africa, the Asia-Pacific and Latin America. This event is also scheduled for 16 September.

An exhibition on the IAEA's technical cooperation programme will be located on the ground floor of the Vienna International Centre, between the A and C buildings. Brochures, leaflets and other promotional materials will be available to illuminate the diverse and effective work undertaken throughout the world as part of the TC programme. Staff members will be present at the exhibition to answer any questions and to provide further insight into the work of the IAEA.
