A special exhibit entitled "Nuclear Technologies for the Environment: Protecting Air, Earth and Oceans" was inaugurated in the Main Hall of the Austria Centre on 19 September during the 50th IAEA General Conference. IAEA Director General, Mohamed ElBaradei and Prince Albert II of Monaco jointly opened the exhibit, which was attended by dignitaries and covered by members of the international press.
The opening programme also included addresses from Ana María Cetto, IAEA Deputy Director General for Technical Cooperation; Werner Burkart, IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Sciences and Applications; Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme; Patricio Bernal, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; and Elizabeth Dowdeswell, President and CEO of Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization. The exhibit was jointly organized by the Department of Technical Cooperation and the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, with support from the Department of Management.
The exhibit reflected the multi-faceted work of the IAEA in the area of the environment and highlighted the contributions of the IAEA to the Millennium Development Goals. In their addresses, Dr. Cetto and Dr. Burkart, underscored the importance of nuclear technologies for sustainable management of the environment and earth systems. For their part, the invited speakers highlighted some of the urgent challenges society was facing in seeking to protect the environment.
A complementary brochure, prepared jointly by the IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation and the Department of Nuclear Applications, illustrated how the IAEA was helping Member States to achieve their development priorities while applying nuclear techniques for environmental protection.
