After reading out the DG's message, Ana Maria Cetto, DDG-TC, added some personal remarks on the occasion of the Conference

Chernobyl

Minsk, Belarus, 19 April 2006

To this message from the Director General, I would like to add just a few words of my own.

The contributions of the IAEA have been recognized by the governments of the affected countries and also by the United Nations. The 60th UN General Assembly resolution on 'Strengthening of international cooperation and coordination of efforts to study, mitigate and minimize the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster' noted 'with satisfaction assistance rendered by the International Atomic Energy Agency to Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine on remediation of agricultural and urban environments, cost-effective agricultural countermeasures and monitoring of human exposure in areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster'.

This assistance, provided through the IAEA's technical cooperation programme, consisted in implementing practical solutions in the affected countries to smooth away some of the effects of the Chernobyl fall-out and to address its 'human dimension' where possible.

The Agency's support will of course continue in the years to come. This is our commitment as IAEA, but also a moral and personal commitment from each one of us as human beings.

Finally, I would like to wish all the Conference participants very successful deliberations in Minsk and in Gomel. I am sure that this Conference will provide an effective contribution to a successful recovery of the affected countries.
