The IAEA monitors nuclear material and facilities around the world to provide credible assurances that nuclear technology is only used for peaceful purposes. Over 800 people work at the IAEA Department of Safeguards, each bringing their own unique skills and background. This photo essay highlights six of our staff members: two inspectors, a systems engineer, a spectrometry specialist, a safeguards containment engineer and an IT systems analyst. These are just some of the faces of safeguards who work to make sure that the IAEA fulfils its mission.

IAEA Safeguards - An Overview

There are many tools available to the IAEA Safeguards inspector. Some of these tools are unique to the IAEA - made specially to ensure that inspectors receive accurate and timely information about states' nuclear activities. The tools also enable inspectors to determine whether the data collected has been falsified or tampered with. This collection of photos looks at some of those tools both in the field and at the IAEA's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Equipment Used in Safeguards

Long before arriving on site, novice and seasoned inspectors alike take part in rigorous training. It kicks off with classroom exercises and lectures before inspectors take their knowledge to the field. The IAEA organizes about 50 training exercises each year, for up to 12 inspectors at a time.
