Nuclear science and technology play an important role in addressing issues in low-carbon energy demand, human health, food security and environmental pollution, and contribute to socioeconomic development around the world.

The IAEA works to foster greater interest in these technologies among youth, including in Asia and the Pacific. Student and teacher winners from a Virtual NST Education Competition visited the IAEA in Austria in May 2022 to present their projects and learn hands on about the many uses of nuclear technology.

Engaging Asian Youth in Nuclear Science

In Sri Lanka, women play a critical role in driving rural communities' economic development and ensuring food security. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sri Lanka is largely self-sufficient in animal products except in dairy, where national consumption has steadily grown since the 1970s, outpacing supply. Boosting dairy production in the country will help empower women in rural areas and improve the country’s self-reliance.

Kuwait has an arid climate, a hostile environment in which to grow crops. In recent years, the country’s scientists have used technology packages derived from nuclear techniques (irradiation to develop new barley varieties with improved traits, combined with water and nutrient management) to be able to grow food.

<p>In its 37 years of existence, the course helped 120 countries build radiation safety knowledge of young graduates from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Latin American and the Caribbean. </p>

Walkthrough the 100 Postgraduate Educational Courses

How much will these children from the Eastern Philippines know about nuclear science and technology when they graduate from high school?

Quite a bit – according to new plans by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology and the country's Department of Education, who are working on rolling out a nuclear science and technology education programme that has been piloted in selected schools in the capital region.
<br /><br />
The teaching material and its lesson exemplars were developed as part of an IAEA technical cooperation project involving several countries across Asia.

Philippines Pilot School Programme Promotes Nuclear Science and Technology Education

The IAEA held its 62nd General Conference in September 2018. Over 2500 participants from 153 Member States attended. Multiple side events and informal meetings offered delegates the chance to learn about the IAEA’s work in nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards and technical cooperation.

Highlights from the 62nd IAEA General Conference: Department of Technical Cooperation

Improved regulation of power plant maintenance in Hungary, higher levels of safety in the transportation of neutron sources in Slovakia and a new network of young nuclear professionals to exchange best practices – these are some of the concrete outcomes of the four-year old Intercontinental Nuclear Institute (INI) that were discussed at a panel discussion dedicated to the impact of INI on young nuclear professionals.

The TC Conference – the first international IAEA conference dedicated to the Technical Cooperation Programme, took place in Vienna from 30 May to 1 June 2017. The Conference provided an opportunity to take stock of the technical cooperation (TC) programme’s achievements, to discuss partnership opportunities, and to examine the way forward for the TC programme.
