The 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non‑Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is being held at the United Nations headquarters in New York from 27 April to 22 May. In the course of this Conference, delegates gathered earlier this month, to discuss the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety.

The IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, endorsed unanimously by all IAEA Member States in September 2011, defines a programme of work to strengthen the nuclear safety framework worldwide. The Action Plan covers peer reviews, emergency preparedness and response, regulatory frameworks, remediation and decommissioning, capacity building, as well as the protection of people and the environment.

Gustavo Caruso, Special Coordinator for the Implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, emphasised that effective implementation through full cooperation and participation of Member States and all relevant stakeholders, including  regulatory bodies, operating organizations, the nuclear industry, technical support organisations, research institutions, and educational institutions, is key to the success of the Action Plan.

Caruso's presentation also highlighted key areas of the forthcoming Report on the Fukushima Daiichi Accident.

An event on nuclear safeguards will be held on Friday, 8 May 2015, from 13.30 to 14:30 in the ECOSOC Chamber at United Nations headquarters during the NPT Review Conference.

Previously, the IAEA held a High-Level Event on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology on 27 April, and a discussion on the implementation of the IAEA Nuclear Security Plan 2014-2017 on 29 April.

The IAEA is also holding an exhibition throughout the duration of the Review Conference highlighting its activities relevant to the implementation of the NPT.
