Dato' Adnan Othman

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Malaysia

The IAEA General Conference elected Ambassador Dato' Adnan Othman of Malaysia as President of its 60th Session on 26 September 2016.

Ambassador Othman is a career diplomat, who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982. His diplomatic assignments included postings in the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York, followed by postings in India, China, Sweden and Indonesia.

In his early start at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Othman served as Assistant Secretary (East Europe), Assistant Secretary (International Organizations) and subsequently Senior Assistant Secretary (Policy Planning). He also served as Special Officer to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1998. He was Principal Assistant Secretary (External Information) from 2001 to 2003, after which he took over as Undersecretary (Special Functions) for a one year period.

Ambassador Othman served as Under Secretary for Southeast Asia in 2008, before becoming the focal point in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), serving as the Under Secretary for the Chemical Weapons Convention National Authority, in 2010. He also served as Under Secretary for Africa.

Ambassador Othman was Malaysia's Ambassador to Cambodia from 2005 to 2008 and Kuwait from 2011 to 2015. He was appointed Ambassador to Austria and Slovakia and Resident Representative to the Vienna-based International Organizations, including the IAEA, last year.

He is Governor of Malaysia on the IAEA Board of Governors.

Ambassador Othman is married and has four children.
