In 2022, the IAEA’s annual General Conference (GC) was held from 26 to 30 September. It was attended by more than 2 500 <a href="#">participants</a> from 153 countries. Delegates also attended additional in-person and hybrid side events and exhibitions, which took place in advance of, and during, the week of the General Conference.

Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing global environmental challenges. By 2025 the ocean will contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish, and by 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Landfills are often brimming with plastic waste and pose an environmental threat to rivers, groundwater and the ocean.

NUTEC Plastics: With Irradiation Towards a Circular Economy

Nuclear science and technology play an important role in addressing issues in low-carbon energy demand, human health, food security and environmental pollution, and contribute to socioeconomic development around the world.

The IAEA works to foster greater interest in these technologies among youth, including in Asia and the Pacific. Student and teacher winners from a Virtual NST Education Competition visited the IAEA in Austria in May 2022 to present their projects and learn hands on about the many uses of nuclear technology.

In Sri Lanka, women play a critical role in driving rural communities' economic development and ensuring food security. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sri Lanka is largely self-sufficient in animal products except in dairy, where national consumption has steadily grown since the 1970s, outpacing supply. Boosting dairy production in the country will help empower women in rural areas and improve the country’s self-reliance.

The IAEA Environment Laboratories in Monaco comprise three separate marine laboratories that are unique within the United Nations system.
